Fangs for the Memories, Friday 20 May

The always helpful Matt Cassar good enough to send me some pics of his family hairtail run, last weekend:

Meaning I couldn’t plan a trip back to cold old Cowan Creek fast enough. At the tail end of last years’ season we figured out how to mechanically jig hairtail using 40 gram micro jigs, and a chemical light on a wire trace:

Too much fun and couldn’t wait to get back into that action again. Phoned Mike Fitzgerald – who’s always up for a fish – and booked in a run last night. We launched from Apple Tree Bay, headed down the creek, and hooked up to a public mooring. Already a few fishos there, including three kayakers. I hooked up a long chain of underwater LEDs to a small battery, while Fitz got the burley going. Bait was pilchards on trebles. Also rigged a jig rod in case they arrived in numbers thick enough to fish with metal:

The action started as night fell:

The fish weren’t swarming by any means but bit steadily through the first two hours. We could see other boats around us hooking up too, with chemical lights see sawing up and down during the fight. Fitz was having a ball:

A nice arrow squid attracted by the LEDs took a pilchard, and was put back out on the bottom as a jewfish bait. But no takers:

Always careful with hairtail. A bite from these fangs not good:

Steady and spaced bite happening. Not huge numbers by any means but some nice ones there:

After a couple of hours we had a good bag of hairtail and started releasing them. With the temperature dropping we decided on giving ourselves an early mark. Back home after a great night and Fitz sent through a pic of his vaccumed packed hairtail chunks. He’s a real pro:

Great to be getting into them again and hopefully this is the start of many more runs through the winter, Andy
