Towbar strength is a factor but I think its a bit more complicated than that.

I thought - I may need correcting , it had to do with gross vehicle mass. GVM being the maximum load the vehicle can support on its tyres - which includes the vehicles own weight plus occupants etc etc. So then there is also the weight the draw bar puts on the back of the car, towball setup etc and what the car can legally tow.

So i think its a few factors involved in what puts you over/under. Something along the lines of total trailer weight plus the cars total weight gives you the number - the overall weight the cops are looking at.

I know its not straightforward and have never really got my head around it but seriously, you see some bloody big rigs being towed by pissy family cars that are a danger on the roads to everyone else. I'm not surprised they are clamping down on it. It's all good and well towing a boat but stopping them........!!

I have a ford station wagon and according to one site, it can tow 2,100kg.

The first tow bar package put on, was limited to 750kg.

Now that I am looking for a boat, I upgraded and now the tow bar package says 1600kg with a tow ball weight of 160kg max.

The tow ball weight is the weight applied to the tow ball and rear suspension on a vertical plane. (just in case nobody knew).
