boat trailer weigh bridge check at portland

Postby Wavethumper Tue May 17, 2016 10:42 pm

What exactly are the police checking at portland? And what is the fine if you go over the weight limit ?

cars max tow is 2100kg
boat trailer total weight 2180 with full fuel
Trailers max rated weight is 1999 and has cable operated brakes and no break away.

I'm a bit sick of all this nanny state bs. Really, my boat was manufacturered sold and registered 15 years ago in its current state so I think it is unreasonable to expect a rec boat user to upgrade car to have brake controller and trailer to breakaway when you consider the number of times it is actually used throughout the year.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression those regs only applied to new rigs or if putting a new trailer under the boat

I was sure you did have to upgrade trailers to newer regs

Cheers

The thing about regulations is that they do change from time to time and whether we like it or not, it is our responsibility to keep on top of it. Nanny state has nothing to do with it.
A trailer is registered separate to the boat, so if you put an overweight rig on it, it is your responsibility – same as overloading anything.
You may well be sick of the BS, but imagine your grief if you have a crash and your insurance company doesn’t want to know you. Now imagine how much worse if someone were to die in the crash……..
I would suggest you try to put things in perspective before crying in your drink about nanny states.

That was helpful spook. So if it is such a life or death matter, why do New Zealand set the limit for break away brakes at 2.5T? Those blokes over there in NZ must be all CRAZY! Towing those 2 tonne + death traps around without break aways!

Regs change, that's fair enough but I don't agree with this one being imposed on old trailers/rigs.

Anyway, stuff paying Vic Police a fine, I think I would rather put that money into upgrading the trailer

Mate, nothing against you personally.
your trailer is 1999 kg rated -I wonder why not 2000? Couldn't possibly be because the manufacturer was trying to be clever could it? Your car is 2100 and yet your all up weight is also over! As I said, you will not be covered if you have a stack. IF someone got hurt, you would be paying for the rest of your life. The perspective I talk about is getting your priorities right. Spend a bit now or spend a lot later. Your choice, but you will get no sympathy from me.

Sorry we can't agree mate, but the strategies manufacturers use to sell boats/trailers has nothing to do with me.

No matter how you look at it the boat and trailer are over weight for tow car
at the worst you could get a fine and have to leave trailer on side of road
until a tow car that is rated can tow it
If you have added stuff to boat ie: anchor winch live bait tank
maybe spare anchor etc that would explain why you are overwieght

Good thinking :
Anyway, stuff paying Vic Police a fine, I think I would rather put that money into upgrading the trailer.....
Was in that position last year with a boat and trailer purchase although with over a tonne difference. Anyways , just have a quick think about what you may want in your boat in the future prior to changing things.
Probably be able to change towbar to a higher rating ? As for your trailer- recompliance to say 2500, breakaway has to be done regardless.
Cheers stewy .
